The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has, on 24th September 2025, approved the extension of service of General Anil Chauhan as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) who shall also function as Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Military Affairs, upto 30th May 2026, or until further orders. General Chauhan was appointed as CDS on 28th September 2022. General Chauhan was commissioned in the Indian Army in 1981 and has had a distinguished and illustrious career with key command positions across various operational capacities.
He has served as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command and has held various important staff appointments, contributing significantly to the modernization and strategic capability enhancement of the Indian Armed Forces. His leadership experience encompasses both conventional and unconventional warfare environments, allowing him to gain invaluable insights into military strategy, joint operations, and inter-service collaboration.

General Chauhan’s tenure as CDS has been marked by a number of pivotal initiatives aimed at enhancing the operational readiness of the Indian military.
